DeVita, etc. is Online!

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins recently unveiled a new web-based electronic resource covering the full text of DeVita's Principles and Practice of Oncology, 6th edition, 2001- with the expectation of adding 10 additional titles, core to the field of oncology, throughout the coming year. In April, the site is expected to add:

  • Diseases of the Breast, 2nd ed., by Harris, et al.
  • Pocket Drug Facts and Comparisons
  • AJCC Cancer Staging Manual - 5th ed.
  • Manual of Clinical Oncology - 4th ed., by Casciato and Lowitz

In May 2001, Cancer Chemotherapy and Biotherapy: Principles and Practice, 3rd ed., by Chabner and Longo, will be launched. The site also includes surgery video clips, a skin cancer atlas, and links to PubMed abstracts. Also, The ever-elusive PPO Updates will appear monthly on the website to add currency to this resource.

Information on 90-day free trials of this valuable new product is available at the website: http://lwwoncology.com The trial provides access via username and password, which can be distributed institutionally. Once the site license is purchased, authentication will be by IP address recognition.

Site licenses are going to be discounted this year - only costing $699 for a single concurrent user. For higher numbers of users, the price will increase. Subscription costs will rise considerably in the second year - to something like $2,500 for the complete 11-book set; however, sites can opt for individual titles only. Apparently, usage statistics will also be provided on a title-by-title basis, so that renewals can be determined based on the resources having the highest demand.

OncoIS - New Oncology Database

Produced by Academic Press, oncoIS at http://www.oncois.com is a new, web-based information system, aimed at providing systematic information on somatic mutations in human tumors. Geared toward the clinical researcher, this system collects data from original oncology literature devoted to mutation screening studies. It includes information on ethnic origin of the patient, tumor type, genes or loci of interest, laboratory methods, features of the technical design, types of genetic events, numbers of cases studies, frequency of abnormalities, correlation with clinical parameters like age at onset, or disease stage; and correlation's between distinct genetic events.

Searches are possible by topic, gene or loci of interest, experimental features, results and bibliographic information. Numerical data retrieved can be presented in various graphical forms, and links to supplemental information are also available.

The database is updated quarterly with 300-400 analyzed articles from top journals such as Oncogene, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and American Journal of Human Genetics. Free 30-day trials of the system are available. Use the contact email address and phone numbers listed below.

My brief attempts at searches of this database revealed some technical flaws, and also generated some questions. A very small number of journals is covered at present, and I didn't see any links to full text, only to abstracts.

I was told that this system will be sold by subscription to institutions for something like $2,000/year. It might be worth watching to see how it evolves.
