Spring 2001
Cancer Librarians Section Newsletter

Message from the Chair

The year has flown by, and soon we will meet in Orlando for our annual business session to make some headway on projects of importance to the Cancer Librarians Section. This past year we strove to accomplish a great deal, and we have made progress in several areas. To begin with, our section is co-sponsoring several interesting programs at the Annual Meeting. Thanks to Gayle Ablove, Chair-Elect of the section, for her hard work in planning these sessions. See her article in this issue for further details.

We have also refined our section website (http://www.selu.com/cancerlib/) to include excerpts of our newsletter, our jointly developed Core Cancer Library list, and basic information about the section. Ann Marie Clark has done an excellent job designing and maintaining this site.

Cheryl Warren conscientiously chaired the Nominating Committee that came up with an outstanding slate of officers for next year. For a small section, we are fortunate to have an energetic group of participating members. Our election results are published in this issue. Thanks to the newly elected officers for agreeing to serve. Also, I'd like to thank the outgoing officers for their creativity and hard work - especially, Cheryl Warren, past-Chair; Margaret Vugrin, Section Council Representative, and Chris Fleuriel, Treasurer. Special thanks also go to our newsletter editors, Tanya Smith and Helen Flitton, for their first-rate work on our ever-important means of communication, the Cancer Librarians Section News.

So, what's left on our plate? First, I have begun the process of updating our bylaws, which are sorely out of date. With the help of the new MLA model bylaws, I was able to make the necessary modifications and pass them by the section officers for comment. We are at the stage of readying them for examination by MLA, but it will likely take another few months to get the new bylaws finalized. I will continue working to see that this process is completed.

We also hope to resurrect the Cancer Resources List at some point and possibly update the Core Library List. These will definitely be topics for discussion at the Annual Meeting this May. Please mark your calendars to attend the section business meeting on Tuesday, May 29, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Let me know of any agenda items you would like to have included. I look forward to seeing you in sunny Florida!
